NECCO Store Opening to Benefit Revere Tornado Relief Fund!

reveretornado

In late July an EF2 tornado ripped through our hometown city of Revere, MA, devastating a large number of businesses and residences. As the likelihood of a tornado hitting our city by the ocean is exceptionally unlikely, many private insurances will not provide complete relief for individuals and businesses who suffered great losses. Total estimated damage is estimated in the millions. Due to the extensive damage caused by the tornado, NECCO will have a special limited opening of the candy store at our headquarters. Proceeds from sales at the store will go to benefit the city’s Revere Tornado Relief Fund. We have been very thankful to have been located in Revere for the past decade and hope to be able to help shoulder the burden that our beloved community is facing as it looks to recover and rebuild.

DATES:           Monday August 18th – Friday August 22nd

LOCATION:           NECCO Headquarters
135 American Legion Highway, Revere, MA

TIME:                        Daily, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

If you’re in the area, please stop by to stock up on all your NECCO favorites and help support the Revere community in their recovery. We hope to see you next week! =)

Mary Jane Turns 100!!

Orginal Mary Jane Plant Paul Revere House Fanuei Hall Boston 1888

In 1914, the legend of Mary Jane began. Inside a small shop that used to be the historic home of Paul Revere in Boston’s North End, the Charles N. Miller Company set forth to create a delicious chewy treat for everyone to enjoy. Taking the name of the creator’s favorite aunt, this treat was sweet from the start, combining the tasty flavor duo of molasses and peanut butter.

For decades, penny candy shops across the nation have encouraged fans to “use your change for Mary Janes!” So many of NECCO’s fans still share stories about their happy childhood memories taking a few dimes down to the corner shop to indulge on some fresh Mary Janes!

Soon after her creation, Mary Jane quickly became so beloved by fans that it was common to see her featured in many fun advertisements sent out across the nation.

Many variations of the classic Mary Jane wrapper appeared over the years as different types of Mary Jane offerings were created.

Also, much to the delight of the sweet tooth of all our fans, Mary Janes  were even covered in delicious milk chocolate for a limited period of time!

The popularity of this special peanut butter and molasses chew was widespread and passionate, and her sweet influence could be seen popping up in unique places across the country.

Over the years, the Miller Company tried several variations of the legendary Mary Jane mixture, but none could compare to the original. Also, none of the other treats dreamed up by the Miller Company could match the longstanding success of Mary Jane, which were a favorite for parties, snacks, offices, and anytime you needed something special and sweet!

n 1990, NECCO purchased the Stark Candy Company, which at the time owned both the Mary Jane and Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses lines, both of which have seen tremendous growth with their new home. Every Halloween, trick or treaters across the country look forward to receiving those tasty Peanut Butter Kisses chews packed in their classic orange and black wrappers.

Though Mary Jane first came to be in 1914, not too much has changed. The gold wrapper with a bold red stripe still packs that same irresistibly delicious original peanut butter and molasses formula today as it did 100 years ago – what a sweet century indeed!

Sweets & Snacks 2014!

Last week, NECCO appeared at the annual Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago with a big, bright booth right in the middle of all action.

We proudly displayed our brands on the booth’s five towering kiosks, with all packaging variations of the candies spread throughout. (Check out NECCO.com to catch a glimpse of our full product line!)

As was the case last year, our kiosk that showcased special historical tokens from over the years created quite a buzz with guests. Some of our sweet artifacts on display included original early 20th century NECCO Wafer and Canada Mints packaging and a sales ledger from 1901 as well as a plethora of vintage photographs of our proud milestones. This kiosk, which so wonderfully showcased our passion and innovation over our 167 years of existence, was definitely a fan (and company) favorite.

Attendees who stopped by even had the opportunity to sample our Junior NECCO Wafers in all three varieties: Assorted, Chocolate and Tropical!

2014 also marks quite an important date in the life of our beloved Mary Jane, as it is the year she turns 100! To commemorate such an important milestone, we also had special goodie bags to educate attendees about the prominent past of Mary Jane and also her bright future of limitless possibilities for this special chew.

In addition to our main booth, we also participated in the New Product Showcase, where hundreds of companies have the opportunity to display their exciting new sweet treats. This year we stood out among the rest by showcasing the power of our popular Sweethearts brand and displayed three of its newest variations: Hot & Cool Hearts, Mummy Hearts and Color Your Own Pop Eggs!

Over 600 domestic and international confectionery and snack companies appeared, filling every corner of the massive McCormick Expo Center with beloved favorites and some seriously sweet innovations. It was a wonderful time to view the best products in the industry and see all of the companies’ hard work come to fruition. There was even an amazing chalk artist on hand at the event to showcase how candy had truly taken over Chicago!

Overall, with over 600 companies in attendance and tens of thousands of people from the industry in attendance, the Sweets and Snacks Expo was undoubtedly a great experience for NECCO! Until next year, Chicago! Our sweet tooth already can’t wait for Sweets & Snacks 2015!

#TBT – Pru Boo 2013!

At NECCO, we love every opportunity we get to attend local events and have fun connecting with our community. On this #ThrowbackThursday, we think back to one of our favorite events that we have appeared recently: the Prudential Center‘s annual “PRU BOO” in Boston! It was a wonderful day where local children are able to come to the huge shopping center in the downtown area of Boston and go trick-or-treating from store to store and have some serious Halloween fun! All benefits from sales of the trick-or-treat bags went directly to benefit local charities that help families and children in need.

The children participating in this amazing event received delicious NECCO sweets in every store! From old favorites like Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses to new exciting treats like our Bat Wings and Mummy Hearts, it was no doubt that every sweet tooth was smiling this past October!

In addition to providing candy, NECCO also had the chance to have a Halloween craft table! At this table, we colored cool NECCO designs with all the little princesses and goblins and also made some fun mini pumpkin & ghost crafts with our NECCO Jr. Wafers, where everyone’s imagination went spookily wild! =)

Take a look at some of the fun photos from the 2013 PRU BOO! We can’t wait until this October to have some Halloween fun again!
